Every few weeks, the Earth cries out for an artificial intelligence scare on a frequency heard only by tech CEOs. And lo, like a rain cloud over a parched valley, here comes Amazon boss Andy Jassy to shower us with\u00a0fresh fear and dread.<\/p>\n

In a memo sent to employees titled \u201cSome thoughts on Generative AI,\u201d Jassy spent 1,200 words largely rattling off examples of Amazon\u2019s AI progress. It is making Alexa, its personal assistant software, \u201cmeaningfully smarter,\u201d and turning its customer service chatbot into \u201can even better experience.\u201d (How, and by what measure? He didn\u2019t say. But \u201cyou get the idea,\u201d he wrote.)<\/p>\n

Then in a textbook example of burying the lede, he got to the point around paragraph 15: We\u2019re almost certainly going to replace some Amazon workers with AI \u201cagents.\u201d<\/p>\n

When? \u201cIn the next few years.\u201d<\/p>\n

How many jobs are we talking about? \u201cIt\u2019s hard to know\u2026 we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where are all these so-called agents? \u201cMany of these agents have yet to be built, but make no mistake, they\u2019re coming, and coming fast.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fast! Soon! We expect! They\u2019re coming!<\/em><\/p>\n

To be clear: I\u2019m not saying Jassy is lying. But he is clearly invoking AI to put a modern spin on a strategy as old as time: Keep workers working by making them afraid of losing their jobs.<\/p>\n

The sentiment echoes a similar but more dramatic statement by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who told CNN and Axios that AI could wipe out\u00a0half<\/em>\u00a0of all entry-level white-collar jobs sometime in the next five years. (Why half? And why five years?\u00a0Eh<\/em>, why not\u2026 Amodei\u2019s motive is to make his core technology\u00a0appear both inevitable and scary-powerful.<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Not all tech CEOs agree, to be clear. Nvidia\u2019s\u00a0Jensen Huang<\/a>\u00a0and Google Deepmind\u2019s Demis Hassabis \u2014 both major players in the AI space \u2014 have\u00a0pushed back<\/a>\u00a0on Amodei\u2019s apocalyptic take.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s important to keep a couple of things in mind when we get these semiannual bursts of AI fearmongering from the very people who stand to profit from advancing the technology.<\/p>\n

One: Automation and machine learning have been around for decades, and yes, that has had (and continues to have) an impact on the labor market. But the idea that generative AI, in particular, is going to usher in some kind of doom-slash-utopia belongs in the realm of science fiction.<\/p>\n

Large language models that power advanced AI chatbots can be impressive sidekicks and sounding boards, to be sure. They are also\u00a0hallucinating more\u00a0\u2014 not less \u2014 the larger they become. And they have\u00a0just about run out\u00a0of the kind of human-grade data engineers need to train the models.<\/p>\n

Two: Notice that Jassy\u2019s note to staff didn\u2019t say AI was coming for\u00a0his<\/em>\u00a0job, or his fellow\u00a0executives\u2019<\/em>\u00a0jobs. Kinda seems like he might want to review what current AI is good at \u2014 producing OK-sounding memos, synthesizing information and (maybe) solving strategic puzzles. And then consider what AI is still\u00a0really<\/em>\u00a0bad at \u2014 physically lifting things and moving them around.<\/p>\n

Three: It\u2019s curious to see Big Tech recycling the same language about \u201cflexibility\u201d and \u201cefficiency\u201d that came with literally every other workplace tech innovation of the last 30+ years. Email, Slack, Teams, Zoom, Plorfen, Globz. (OK I made the last two up.)<\/p>\n

To be clear, those things aren\u2019t inherently bad. They\u00a0did<\/em>\u00a0give us flexibility that proved vital during the 2020 lockdowns. But they also gave us the flexibility to be online in perpetuity, all day and night, seven days a week.<\/p>\n

Incidentally, Microsoft, a company that\u2019s earmarked\u00a0$80 billion in AI\u00a0spending for the year, just released a report about how those innovations have \u2014 rather than liberate office workers from drudgery \u2014 actually trapped us in an \u201cinfinite workday.\u201d<\/p>\n

The report found the typical office worker using Microsoft\u2019s Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint and other products increasingly spend their days getting interrupted\u00a0every two minutes<\/em>\u00a0by a meeting, an email or a chat notification during a standard eight-hour shift. That\u2019s 275 pings a day, my colleague\u00a0Anna Cooban notes.<\/p>\n

The average employee receives 117 emails a day, and sent or received 58 instant messages outside of their core working hours \u2014 a jump of 15% from last year.<\/p>\n

Part of Microsoft\u2019s solution for this \u201cbroken system,\u201d it should be noted, includes re-orienting jobs around \u2014 wait for it \u2014 AI agents.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
