As the year cycles through, once again we are greeted by the sacred festival of Eid-ul-Adha \u2014 the Eid of Sacrifice. Qurbani (sacrifice) signifies letting go<\/strong> \u2014 a deep spiritual lesson that true happiness lies not in indulgence, but in sacrifice. In both this world and the hereafter, success and salvation are rooted in sacrifice.<\/p>\n

Qurbani at its core is a sacrifice of the heart<\/strong>. Zakat and Sadaqah are financial sacrifices; prayer and fasting are physical sacrifices. But the greatest test lies in sacrificing the desires of the heart \u2014 what the heart longs for, but must let go of. This is often the hardest. The pagan Quraish of Makkah could not let go of their idol worship, even to the extent of sacrificing their lives in battle against Islam \u2014 yet failed to submit their hearts to the belief in one Allah and in His oneness.<\/p>\n

Through the act of slaughtering an animal during Qurbani, we symbolically learn to detach from material possessions<\/strong> and subdue the “animal” within \u2014 the selfish ego, greed, and arrogance. As the Qur\u2019an says:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIt is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is your taqwa<\/strong> (God-consciousness) that reaches Him.\u201d
(Surah Al-Hajj, 22:37)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Taqwa<\/strong> resides in the heart. Only we and our Lord truly know what is in our hearts. Qurbani, therefore, is not a mere ritual \u2014 it is an expression of complete devotion, where we offer everything for the pleasure of Allah.<\/p>\n

Qurbani is a Wajib (obligatory) act<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Qurbani is not optional<\/strong> for those upon whom it is wajib. It is a worship with immense spiritual reward. Even for those on whom it is not obligatory, voluntarily performing Qurbani brings great blessings, inshaAllah.<\/p>\n

Qurbani is not a minor act of worship<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Some treat Qurbani lightly, assuming it\u2019s optional or only for those who can afford large animals. But even a modest goat or sheep offered with sincerity fulfills this obligation. The focus is not on the cost<\/strong>, but on the intention<\/strong>. Allah does not demand thousands in sacrifice \u2014 a humble offering is just as valuable if given for His sake.<\/p>\n

Qurbani must be solely for Allah<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Qurbani must be performed with pure intentions<\/strong>, seeking only the pleasure of Allah<\/strong>. The Islamic definition of Qurbani is to present a beloved possession (an animal) for the sake of drawing near to Allah, using the method prescribed in Shariah.<\/p>\n

As the Qur\u2019an instructs:<\/p>\n

\u201cSo pray to your Lord and offer sacrifice [to Him alone].\u201d
