Tensions surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s sudden departure from Portugal’s national team camp have escalated, with Prime Minister Luís Montenegro reportedly intervening in the dispute involving the veteran forward and head coach Jorge Jesus.

Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen on Wednesday, 30 September, just a day before the team’s UEFA Nations League match against Denmark. The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) confirmed his departure but said the rest of the squad would continue preparations as planned.

The dispute began after Ronaldo was left on the bench throughout Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway. The 41-year-old forward subsequently trained separately from the squad and did not take part in the team’s final training session before the Denmark match.

Jesus acknowledged that Ronaldo was unhappy about being left out against Norway but denied that there had been a serious confrontation between them. He also insisted that team selection decisions were his responsibility.

After Jesus addressed the issue at a press conference on Wednesday, Ronaldo announced that he had decided to leave the camp following a conversation with FPF president Pedro Proença. He said he would explain the reasons for his decision “in due course”.

Prime minister reportedly intervenes

According to Portuguese newspaper Record, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro contacted Proença following Ronaldo’s departure and subsequently spoke with Jorge Jesus. The report said the prime minister was seeking to understand the situation and help facilitate discussions around the dispute.

The reported intervention comes as Portugal prepares for its Nations League meeting with Denmark. Ronaldo’s departure has added uncertainty around the squad at a crucial point in the competition.

Portuguese media have also reported that Montenegro may have spoken directly with Ronaldo. However, details of any such conversation and its outcome have not been officially disclosed.

Ronaldo’s future remains uncertain

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s record goalscorer and most-capped player, with 146 international goals in 234 appearances.

The FPF has said the national team will continue preparing for its upcoming fixtures despite Ronaldo’s departure.

For now, neither Ronaldo nor the federation has provided a full explanation for why he left the camp. Ronaldo has indicated that he will reveal his reasons later, leaving questions over his immediate future with the national team.
