A human chain was held in Meherpur to protest against encroachment of safe roads and footpaths. On Friday around 4:30 pm, a human band was held in front of the Meherpur Press Club organized by Volunteers for Bangladesh – Meherpur district branch.
Khandokar Muiz (Vice Principal, Meherpur College of Engineering and Technology), prominent social activist and President of Meherpur District Entrepreneurs Association Shariful Islam Palash, many students of various colleges declared unity with the members of Volunteers for Bangladesh Meherpur district.
Khondoker MuizSpeakers in the human chain said that there is very little sidewalk system in the small town of Meherpur. Although there are footpaths in several important places of the city, they have been occupied by illegal encroachers. Common people cannot use these footpaths, due to which traffic jams are increasing and accidents are increasing. It may be noted that one person was killed and two others were seriously injured when an overloaded trolley hit the heart of the city in front of Meherpur Municipality.
Despite the administrative policy, these trolleys are illegally plying the important and busiest roads of the city day and night, resulting in any major accidents. Besides, the footpath used for pedestrians in Meherpur city has been occupied by a class of people for a long time and doing business with the help of the upper class.
Due to which ordinary citizens are not able to use the sidewalk for walking

Bongs are forced to move on the roads, due to which severe traffic jams are created in the city and accidents of various kinds occur occasionally.
At one stage of the speech, the dire situation prevailing in the movement of common people day after day due to the accumulation of garbage on the side of the road in each ward of Meherpur municipality was highlighted.
Meanwhile, a strong demand was raised with the Mayor of Meherpur Municipality to arrange dustbins on every road as soon as possible so that the public can move through a clean and healthy environment.
The speakers at this time strongly demanded from all quarters including the administration to free these footpaths from illegal occupiers and stop illegal traffic on the roads and also gave a one month ultimatum to all including the administration, municipality to make them free from encroachment within one month. By making roads safe for pedestrians and stopping illegal traffic and providing dustbins on every road.
Speakers also said that if necessary, a large number of mass gatherings will be held, regardless of party, creed, religion, caste, and human chaining will be done more widely until everything is successful.
